There are tattoos and then there are tattoos. That may not seem to make much sense but the truth is, there is a huge difference between a safe, properly applied tattoo and the amateur art work that some people have on their bodies. Of course, examples of past work are the best way to determine if you have found a good artist. Referrals and recommendations from friends will help quite a bit. A visit to the tattoo artist’s shop will give you some idea about professionalism, safety and health conditions.

If you have the opportunity to meet with several tattoo specialists at a convention or other gathering, do so. If not, you should probably make an effort to visit the shop or studio of three or more individuals. It will also help to ask others about their tattoos, even if they aren’t friends or family members. Tattoos are sort of like a badge of honor among like-minded people.

One of the best places to find out about tattoos, designs and, of course, tattoo artists, is the tattoo magazine. This has become a huge business in the past 20 or 30 years. Not too many years ago the only people who had tattoos were men who came home from the Navy or hoodlums who got their tattoos in prison. In the 21st century getting a tattoo is about as common among young women as getting their ears pierced.

You can also find a lot of information on tattoo Web sites with a simple search online. There are millions upon millions of places to learn about tattoos and to find out where the top tattoo parlors are. Of course, pay attention to the skill and creativity of the individual when you are searching for the right tattoo artist. Look for obvious signs of professionalism.

If you don’t feel comfortable with the person or with the shop/studio conditions when you visit in person, move on. There is no harm in taking a lot of time finding the right artist to work with. While you may be anxious to get your new tattoo, remember that there is really no rush. Tattoos have been around for thousands of years and skilled tattoo artists will be around for years to come.

As you search for the right tattoo artist be prepared to pay a little extra for great art, skill and professionalism. Almost anyone can go into business as a tattoo artist but as we stated in the beginning, there are huge differences between the good ones and the run-of-the-mill shops.

When you prepare to go the shop and get your tattoo, make sure you have an appointment. While it may be possible to walk in to some places, the best artists may only be able to accommodate you with an appointment. To repeat: There are excellent tattoo artists around but they will probably be very busy.

You should be given detailed instructions on how to care for your tattoo. Many instructions involve keeping the tattoo clean with soap and water, avoiding sunlight, not picking at scabs, and keeping the area unharmed.

Tips.

1.) Do not use strong soaps or detergents on the tattoo. It is normal for the area to bleed for the next 24 hours after getting the tattoo. Pressure will stop the bleeding, so direct pressure should be applied to stop the minimal amount of bleeding. Cold packs are important to stop the swelling.

2.) Never put the cold pack directly on the skin. Use a cloth or fabric between the skin and the pack. Direct contact will cause skin damage.
Use antibiotic ointment. Apply the ointment onto a nonstick bandage instead of directly on the skin and apply the bandage onto the tattoo area. Always change the bandage everyday. Try to let air flow onto the tattoo area for it needs air to circulate.

3.) If the bandage gets stuck, soak the whole area in warm water and wait. It should come off with your warm shower.
