From the oldest times, the butterflies had an important signification in different cultures. Because of the unique transforming process, but also because the different colors of butterflies, the short life duration and the liberty, the butterflies are considered symbols of changes, beauty and freedom. This is why the signification of a butterfly tattoo can be different from one person to the other, as those describe diverse aspects of the personality of the respective person.

In the Japanese antique culture, the butterfly was a symbol adopted by rulers, symbolizing the rebirth of the family name. the Mexican culture considered the butterfly as the symbol of victory, while Europeans consider the butterfly as the symbol of beauty and soul. All those could be considered significations of the butterfly tattoo.

The first manifestations of what we call today “body art” were recorded 12 000 years ago. People that had wounds on their body tried to heal those by rubbing them with ashes. As the wounded areas started to heal, the traces of ashes remained impregnated in the skin, just like drawings. Soon, writing on skin and drawing on it became common, and the tattoos became symbols and statements.

It is not known where the first tattooed people on the planet appeared, but the latest discoveries point Antique Egypt as the place where drawing on the body became an art. The tattoos differ from one population to another, but the idea remains the same. The leaders of certain groups needed to distinguish themselves, and the best way to highlight the statute of leader for life was to draw something on the skin.

In 1876, the tattooing machine appears. This was a device that worked on an electrical engine. After the world war II, the tattoo spreads all over the world. this is why today the tattoo is not a drawing, is a way of expressing and freeing the mind. Today, it can have many other significations, being great as a decorative element or as an expression of art.
